Elect Cathy Moon for Flagler County School Board

A brighter future begins here.

I am Cathy Moon and I’m running for Flagler School Board. My children and I are successful graduates of public schools. I explored a private school for my son who is gifted but came to the decision that the public school was the best environment for him.

Most of us have fond memories of one or more teachers. I have several personal examples, but one in particular and a school counselor had a profound impact on my life and as a result, in high school I joined the Future Teachers of America. I completed a bachelor’s degree in health and safety education in 3.5 years while also working part time at the postal service.  After my children started school, I started a career at the postal service which spanned nearly 30 years.

I began as a letter carrier delivering mail and I quickly rose to increasing levels of responsibility at a district office, area office, and postal headquarters in Washington, DC where I was promoted to an executive level. Along the way, I earned a graduate certificate in human resources and a master’s degree in business. As the Manager, Mail Transport Equipment, I managed a budget of $280M which I utilized to purchase all of the trays, tubs, sacks and rolling stock for the entire nation and lead a logistics operation which repositioned that equipment all over the nation via rail and over the road transportation.

I grew up in rural West Virginia, and I also lived in South Dakota and Virginia prior to retiring to Florida with my husband in 2017 so we could be near our only grandchild. We explored Jacksonville, Ponte Vedra, and St Augustine, but when we visited Palm Coast, we knew we were meant to live here. In 2018, we started a small business which we closed at the end of 2024.

I began to reflect on how I could use the gifts I had been given in the form of education, career opportunities, and learned skills to give something back to my community. I started attending school board meetings last fall and began to see a potential place for me.

I have been on a listening tour through meeting with neighbors, attending formal meetings such as Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), School Advisory Council (SAC), and joining community meetings. I even knocked on the doors of strangers. Through this process I have spoken with and listened to hundreds of Flagler residents.

• I met parents who relocated their families to Flagler because of the quality of the schools.
• Parents shared that they were proud of successes of their students and felt they received a good education here.
• I heard ideas and suggestions to make Flagler Schools even better.
• I talked with teachers who love what they do but morale is low. 

Through these conversations and other research, I learned of many positive steps in Flagler schools, such as improving graduation rates and robust opportunities for our high school students to graduate with a “Diploma Plus” where all high school students are expected to enroll in at least one course that leads to an industry certification or college credit.  

Even programs that are doing well can benefit from Continuous Improvement principles. Let’s go from good to great! I am committed to utilizing my skills and experience to propel Flagler Schools to become Florida’s best! We will make our public schools the best school choice in Flagler County.
